One of the best and upcoming career choices is becoming a personal trainer. It’s a career choice where you get to share your passion with others who are interested in the same journey. More importantly, you are providing a positive result for someone who is compensating you for your time and knowledge. It can be a great feeling knowing that you have helped someone out who really needed help. But one of the most common questions that we get asked is how do you become a personal trainer? What is the process and where do I start?
First things first, there are certain requirements that must be met in order to become a personal trainer. These minimum requirements require you to be at least 18 years of age, have valid identification, and a CPR certification. Once you can cross of those 3 you can finally move on the the second step of becoming a trainer, passing your exam.
To become certified as a personal trainer you have to pass an exam. There are many different paths you can get your certification from. They are the American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Nation Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the National Federation of Personal Trainers (NFPT). Each of these specialize in different aspects of personal training and each have their own cost for taking the exam. Exams can cost as low as $219-$599 and if you include study courses then prices can be as high as $1999. Total time it takes to complete a course is roughly 6 months, although if are a quick learner it’s not unheard of to get your certification in less than a month.
Once passing your exam the next step is to start building your clientele. For many personal trainers starting out this can be the toughest part, which is why it’s recommended you get your feet wet by working for a commercial gym such as 24 hour fitness, Anytime Fitness, California Family Fitness, Crunch, or whichever gym is prominent in your area. We happen to be located in Sacramento so to become a personal trainer in Sacramento you can just easily walk into a 24 hour fitness and apply. The only downfall for working in a commercial gym is that they take a cut out of your commissions. Once you become more experienced with the process you can venture out and become an independent personal trainer.
One important thing to note is that when you become a personal trainer, you are essentially operating as a business. You are your own boss and your success is dictated by the amount of hustle you put in. While the average yearly salary for a personal trainer ranges around $50,000, it’s possible to make upwards over $100,000 if you put the time into building your profession as a business. You have to learn how to properly market yourself and use all of the available tools such as social media and even search engines. Apply and advertise yourself with sites such as Yourtrainer or Sacfitnesstrainer to further expose yourself.
